Attendance: You have a better chance to succeed in the class if you attend regularly. There will be announced and unannounced quizzes with no make-ups, and missing them will eventually lower your grade. More than three absences may lower your grade. If you miss more than two classes in a row, you may be dropped, but it is your responsibility to formally drop the class in the Administration Building if you no longer wish to attend the class. Being late to class is not courteous, and consistent tardiness may lead to receiving fewer points for the class, and consequently, a lower grade. It’s very important to speak only English in class.

Homework: Your homework may be checked at random throughout the quarter. It is very important to come to the class prepared. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out from your classmates, or your teacher, what your home assignment is.

Writing Assignments: You will write a number of paragraphs on various topics.

Instructions for writing paragraphs:

1) Each paragraph needs to be approximately 150 words long. (If you are using a pen or pencil to write and if you write on every other line, it will take about 1 page.)

2) Write on the assigned topic. Talk to your instructor if you are not sure what to write.

3) Do your own writing. Remember that you will lose points for plagiarism (material written by somebody else without mentioning the name of the real author).

4) Use standard size paper (8.5 by 11 inches).

5) Leave a margin of at least 1 inch on all 4 edges of the paper.

6) If you are using a computer or a typewriter, double-space your work.

7) If you are using a pen or a pencil, write on every other line so that your instructor has room to write comments.

8) Identify your work: write your name, class, assignment number, and topic in the upper left-hand corner.

9) Rewrite your paragraph a couple of times before turning it in.

10) Don’t turn in messy papers (no crossed out words or white out).

11) Don’t put your papers in a folder.

12) Assignments turned in after due dates will lose points. Turn in your assignments on or before the day they are due.

Quizzes: There will be announced and unannounced quizzes throughout the quarter. They may be in the beginning, the middle, or the end of the class, so if you are constantly late to class or leave early, you may lose points.

Midterm: If you have serious circumstances which can be verified, and you are absent on the day of the midterm, you will not lose your points. Instead, your final score will be doubled.

Plagiarism and cheating policy:
Plagiarism, presenting somebody else’s work as your own, will not be tolerated. You must write your own papers. If you want to use somebody else’s words in your writing, you need to mention that in your paper.

Cheating on quizzes and exams is a serious offense, and will be treated accordingly. Cheating on exams/quizzes includes the following: communicating with any person other than the instructor (including by cell phone), looking into another student’s work, using written material other than the exam, and using an electronic device such as a computer or dictionary (including electronic dictionary).

Should any of this happen, the first time you will receive a “0” on the assignment, the second time ten points will be deducted from your final grade, the third time you will be asked to drop the class.
