French 4-5-6: Intermediate FrenchFrench 4-5-6 is the second-year series of French courses offered at De Anza. French 4, 5 and 6 are each 5-unit courses.
Students in French 4, 5 and 6 all meet together as one class, Monday through Friday from 11:30 to 12:20. In the Fall quarter, we cover the first 3rd of the textbook, in Winter we cover the middle section, and in Spring we cover the last 3rd of the book. The book is designed so that students will not have problems joining the class in the Winter or the Spring and starting with the middle of the text.
This class is conducted ENTIRELY in French. We all do the same in-class activities: grammar exercises, reading and discussion of literary excerpts, in-depth study of one film each quarter, translation exercises, oral presentations. The amount of homework assignments (vocabulary homework, reading, compositions) varies for the three levels. All students take the same exams. French 4 and 5 students have points added to their raw scores. Tests assess students' grammar proficiency, knowledge of vocabulary and comprehension of literature studied.
Prerequisite for French 4: French 3 or equivalent (1 year of college French or 3 years of high school French)
Prerequisite for French 5: French 4 or equivalent
Prerequisite for French 6: French 5 or equivalent
De Anza College does not have placement exams for foreign language classes. If you are not sure which level of French you should take, please contact me and I will try to help you make that determination.
The textbook for French 4-5-6 is En Bonne Forme, 8th edition, by Dietiker and van Hooff, Houghton-Mifflin Co., 2007. Please be sure to get the 8th edition, and not the 7th.
