| I got to know John when I started to venture out into the world of committees. My first was as a rep from Foothill for ECCTYC and then later LARC and others. John was a reason I continued to serve on such groups. If he was representing the district, I would gladly sign up, too. He is a brilliant leader, knowing just how to get things done. Often during a heated debate John would remain silent until the end. Then he would get THAT smile and add his contribution to the mix, one that brought "it" all together, wiped out the "bs," and led us all to an obvious next step. He cared so much about students, teachers, and teaching that his proposals were always workable (for us) and furthered success (for students). "I'm with him- from the same district," I used to say, hoping some of the shine would rub off. Many, many years later, I was the Foothill English Dept Chair for a few years. To run all the millions of meetings, I drew from what I remembered of John's strategies: keep the meetings honest, on task, and punctuated with lots of humor. It worked for me. I thank him for being who he is and will miss him.
