Course Description:
In ESL 72 you will have the opportunity to explore short reading selections on a variety of different topics presented in New Directions and to focus on the reading of the novel, Kindred, by Octavia Butler. In all the reading work we do this quarter you will be encouraged to ask meaningful questions and to expand your understanding of what you read. You will do this sometimes by reading beyond the text and at other times by sharing your ideas with your peers both in class discussions and in writing. In these ways, you will find yourself naturally developing your academic vocabulary and reading skills while we build a community where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas.
Expanding your reading ability also will help you to become a more confident and proficient writer as you analyze what you read and think critically about the writer's ideas. The best learning experiences require commitment and hard work; my commitment to you is to encourage a process of learning which seems "as natural as breathing" and to create a classroom environment where you always feel supported and challenged to do your best work.
