Course Description:
ESL 213 is a 1/2-unit class which emphasizes the development of vocabulary and the use of idioms in context. We will meet for 8 weeks, starting week 3, and each small group session will last for 1 1/2 hours. Every week, we will focus on a different topic which will give you a chance to expand your vocabulary in different contexts through music, short readings, and conversation. You may also be asked to visit idiom or other helpful websites to prepare for class discussion. You should put in about 2 hours of preparation a week for this class. You will have a chance to do the following activities:
- Share your ideas in response to the class discussion topics in a small group setting.
- Learn how to participate actively in spontaneous or unrehearsed conversations.
- Practice asking questions and responding to the questions of others.
- Create short dialogues or skits using new idioms to perform for your group.
- Improve your vocabulary by keeping a notebook with definitions and examples.
- Explain the meaning of vocabulary and idioms to your classmates.
- Learn about good online resources where you can improve your English vocabulary. click on the Vocabulary & Idioms link to get started.
- Evaluate your vocabulary development at the end of the course.
Grading Criteria:
ESL 213 is a pass/no pass class
1. To get credit for this class, you will need to attend class regularly. If you miss more than 1 class, you may be dropped by the instructor.
2. You will need to participate in class activities and prepare homework assignments.
3. At the end of the class, you will have a chance to evaluate your own vocabulary development and get feedback from your instructor.

Listening and Speaking Lab Hours
LSL is open 5 days a week. You are encouraged to use our lab to complete your homework assignments and to improve your listening and speaking skills:
Monday: 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 9:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Wednesday: 9:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Thursday: 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Friday: 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

• Join a student club at De Anza!
What's your favorite activity? Find a De Anza group that is doing what you enjoy and join them. For example, clubs, like the International Student Volunteers, get involved with community service projects and have fun together at the same time!

We offer a variety of programs in the lab to help you with your speaking and listening needs including 30 minute tutoring sessions.
