Spring 2014

Business 070

My name is Guillermo A. (Willie) Hernandez. Teacher: I was born in Manati Puerto Rico many moons ago. I graduated from the University of Puerto Rico in 1975 with a degree of Bachelor in Science In Electrical Engineering. Right after graduation, I married my one and only wife Ana and moved to the United States to work with General Dynamics. In General Dynamics I worked as a Design Engineer. In this position I had the chance to work in very interesting projects such as the Atlas Centaur Rocket program, the F16 fighter armament control subsystem, the Tomahawk Cruise Missile, and others.

While in San Diego, I had the chance to work on my masters degree. I completed my Masters of Sciences in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) with concentration in computer architecture and advanced logic design. The hardest part of the MSEE was not the subject matter, but the fact that my first daughter decided to be borne on the day I was studying for a final test scheduled for the following day. While my wife was in labor, I was assisting her and studying for the test in the little spare-time I had. Ana Maria, was born at 5 AM in the morning. At 8:00 AM I was taking my final, I managed to score a 100%.

After San Diego I went to work in Maryland for Fairchild Space and Electronics Company. I worked with them for 2.5 years. I had the chance to work in the Space Telescope program, Space Shuttle, and the Voyageur satellite. In Maryland I had my second daughter, Angelica. After Maryland, I moved to Fort Lauderdale Florida. In Florida, I worked for Bendix Avionics, Mitel, and Siemens Information Systems. I began working in the telecommunications field in 1980. This field is very interesting and dynamic. It covers all aspects of remote communications for both, humans and computers. As such, it includes the public telephone network you use every day, the networks your computers use at work, while on the Internet, and the network we are using in this online class.

In Florida I completed my Masters in Business Administration, and in 1982 I became the father of a boy, Billy. In 1985, I completed my Masters in Business Administration (MBA), with concentration in finance and marketing of new products. I started working in marketing as a product manager. A product manager is responsible for managing the entire life cycle of a product. We also have profit and loss (P&L) responsibility for the products we manage. I moved to California in 1990 as a result of Siemen's acquisition of a competitor. I moved to San Jose, California as part of the transition team to work with the newly acquired company. I have been living in California since 1990 working in the telecommunications and networking fields.

I view myself as your facilitator for the classes I teach at De Anza. I am looking forward to working with all of you. My role will be to help you help me in creating an environment where not only we can learn from the class material, but also learn from our collective experiences and knowledge. I have found that each learning experience is unique. Therefore, I can say: "lets boldly go were no one has gone before."
