Revision Guidelines

If I have asked you to revise one of your essays, as soon as possible you should:

  • Read over the entire paper and all my comments carefully.

  • Write down your questions about anything you don't understand.

  • Write an essay plan or rough outline you will use to revise your essay.

Then, and only then:

  • Rewrite your essay to make it stronger.

  • Highlight all the sections you've added or changed.

  • Turn it in to me in a folder along with the earlier graded draft and the grading sheet by the revision due date.

I will not accept revisions that don't include all three of these things:

  1. your highlighted changes,

  2. your earlier graded draft,

  3. the grading sheet you received with the earlier draft.

You'll also find useful information on these pages: Revising: Questions to Consider, Understanding Assignments, 100B Website of the Week, and 100B Essay Evaluation Criteria, Proofreading.

  • improve your organization
  • discuss reading
  • work on grammar
  • use quotes correctly
  • write more effective thesis statements; see Tips on Thesis Statements and then take one you're working on to get help from a tutor or instructor in the center.
  • work on sentence structure
  • learn how to proofread and edit your own writing. (Consider printing out exercises from Proofreading for any problems you know you need to work on and going over the exercises with an instructor or tutor in the center.)
