EWRT2 Syllabus (Page 2)

Rewrites: You may rewrite two papers. In order to rewrite your paper, you must comply with the following items:

  • You must have completed at least 2 pages of your peer review draft on the day it was due.
  • You must submit a one-page, typed proposal of your specific plans for rewriting following the rewrite guidelines located in the Course Reader.
  • If your proposal is approved, you will have one week to submit your rewritten paper.
  • When you submit your rewritten paper, include your original paper, your revised paper, your rewrite, your approved proposal, and the grading matrix from your graded paper.
  • On the rewrite of your paper, highlight ALL your changes. If your rewrite is not at least 25% different from your revision, it will not be accepted. Students may receive up to 15 additional points for each rewrite.
Message board posts: For each unit, you will be asked to create original messages (called “topics”) of at least 200 words each to questions and/or prompts on the readings, which you are to post on the class message board. Also, you should reply to a minimum of two other students’ posts; your reply to a post should be at least 120 words. You must complete 8 of 10 topics and 8 of 10 replies. You may do extra topics and replies, but you will not receive any extra credit. Late entries will be accepted up to one week after the due date with a deduction of points.

To join the list, go to my homepage at http://faculty.deanza.fhda.edu/hearnlydia/ and click on the link for EWRT2 discussion groups. Once there, click on “register” (near the top of the screen). You may create whatever username you wish, but make sure you email me what your username is so that you can get credit for your entries. After you register, you may log on. Click on the EWRT2 section and post to the correct unit. If you would like to visit the board directly, go to http://lhearn.19.forumer.com/

Option #2: You may submit written response logs instead if you don’t have regular Internet access. Students who select this option will be notified of specific guidelines for submitting responses that are equivalent to the online posts. However, you must notify me at the beginning of the quarter (by the end of the first week) that you are selecting this option. If you come to me during the middle of the quarter, you will not be allowed to use this option.

Final Exam: The final exam is NOT comprehensive. Instead, it will address the issues discussed in Unit 5 – Internet. Students will be given 1.5 hours to complete the exam.

Tutorials: Many days will be reserved for grammar and essay organization tutorials. Students have the option of taking a diagnostic grammar/writing skills quiz during office hours a few days before the tutorial. If the student receives an 8.5/10 or higher, the student need not attend the tutorial. The topics of discussion for each tutorial are listed in the Course Schedule. There are seven quizzes on the material throughout the quarter. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. The quiz dates noted are tentative and subject to change.

COURSE REGULATIONS

First week attendance: Students must be present every day for the first week of classes to reserve their spaces in the class. If a student misses a class during the first week and does not contact the instructor by the next day, s/he may be dropped from the class.

Dropping: Withdrawal from class before the deadline is the responsibility of the student. Do not depend on the instructor to drop you. Failure to withdraw by the dates noted in the schedule of classes will result in a failing grade. The instructor also has the option to drop you from the class if you have missed more than five class periods.

Disruptive Classroom Behavior: Disruptive classroom behavior may include (but is not limited to) the following: talking when it does not relate to the discussion topic, sleeping, reading other material (e.g. newspapers, magazines, textbooks from other classes), eating or drinking, monopolizing discussion time, refusing to participate in classroom activities, leaving on cellular phones and pagers, and engaging in any other activity not related to the classroom activity. Students who engage in disruptive classroom behavior will be approached by the instructor and may receive a lower participation grade. If the disruptive behavior continues, students may be eventually be dropped from the course.

Cheating and Plagiarism: Plagiarism constitutes taking someone else’s ideas as your own even if you do not use the exact same wording. Anytime you use someone else’s ideas or words, you need to provide the necessary references and citations. Plagiarism includes (but is not limited to) having somebody else write your essays for you or using an essay or taking bits and pieces (without citing them) from any informational source (such as the Internet, a book, a magazine, a newspaper, and so forth). If a student is caught plagiarizing, penalties can range from the student receiving a zero on the assignment to reporting the incident to administration (which may eventually result in a dismissal from the course and/or from the school).

Censorship policy: This is an adult level course, and materials/discussion addressing adult themes will not be censored.

Tutorial center: De Anza’s tutorial center is located in L47 and the writing center is located in ATC309. You may receive tutoring services including drop-in help, regularly scheduled tutoring sessions, and/or online tutoring assistance for papers at both centers. For more information, go to my webpage and click on the link in the bottom left corner or directly visit each center’s website at http://www.deanza.edu/tutorial/ or http://faculty.deanza.edu/writingcenter/.
