Fall 2002 - Essay #4

Unit 4-Defining the Other -- Part 2

Assignment:

Throughout the quarter, we have explored texts that in one way or another present what some might consider "monstrous" whether it be in the form of a literal monster, a character's behavior, thoughts, writing, etc. Select a minimum of two major texts ("The Metamorphosis, Frankenstein, Dracula, Beloved, Cloud Nine, or M. Butterfly), one of which must be from the second half of class (those texts addressed after the midterm). Explore an aspect of something that you would consider "monstrous".

This topic is purposely ambiguous and open-ended because I want you to exercise your own critical thinking skills not only to write your paper but to conceive of an idea that appeals to you. The more you are interested in your topic (which, hopefully, you will be if you create your topic), the more engaging and effective your essay is likely to be. You may look at the questions from previous assignments and from class discussions for ideas, but I ask you to make this paper your own. That is, don't just write a formulaic answer to one of the questions.

Logistics:
  • Do not repeat significant passages that you addressed in your previous essays.
  • All papers must be typed and double-spaced. Papers should have 1" margins on all sides and standard 12 pt. font should be used.
  • The paper should include an informative and interesting title.
  • Papers must be a minimum of five pages (not including the heading and title). Ideally the paper will be between 5-7 pages.
  • The paper is due on Monday, December 12, 2002.
