COURSE DESCRIPTION

In EWRT1C, students will develop analytical, comparative skills in reading and writing. Students will engage in academic (interpretive, analytical, and argumentative) writing based on the reading of literary texts including poetry, short fiction, the novel, film, and drama. This particular offering of the course is entitled "Freaks, Geeks, and Perverts." Throughout the quarter, we will explore various versions of the Other, examining our various definitions of the Other, our possible motivations for alienating the Other, our paradoxical fascination with the Other, and our responses to hearing the Other's narrative.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Participation and Attendance: Regular class attendance is mandatory. After five absences, your grade begins to decline by 20 points per class session missed. Two tardies are considered an absence. Students are expected to do the assigned readings before each session and to come prepared to discuss the readings. Your grade will reflect only your participation. Of course, you need to attend class in order to participate. If you attend every class but participate minimally, the highest grade you will receive for participation will be a C.

Formal Papers: There are four papers: 2 close analyses (2-3 pages each), one 4-page essay, and one 5-7 page essay. All formal essays/papers must be typed and are due on the days assigned (see Course Schedule). Each paper's grade will decline by 30 points for each late date.

Midterm and Final exams: The midterm exam will address the texts from the first half of class. The final will be cumulative. Students should note the dates of the exams as there are no make-up exams. Both the midterm and final exams will consist of short-answer identifications, close analysis readings, and essay questions.

Presentations: Students will work collaboratively in groups of 3-4 and will provide an oral presentation of 10-15 minutes, sharing their analysis of a passage from a longer text. Presentations will be scheduled throughout the quarter. See course reader for further instructions.

Listserv posts: You will be asked to write an original response to questions and/or prompts on the readings. By the due dates noted on the Course Schedule, you are to post two entries on the class listserv. Each post should be at least 150 words. The first post should respond to one of the presenting group’s questions. The second post may either answer another of the group’s questions or may address a different issue in the text that you find interesting. There are a total of 14 posts, and you must complete 12 of them.

The objective of the listserv is to provide students with a forum in which they can brainstorm, develop their ideas more fully, share their thoughts with their peers, and prepare them for class discussion. To join the list, go to my homepage at http://faculty.deanza.edu/hearnlydia/ and click on the link for EWRT1C discussion groups. Once there, follow the directions (which include signing up for the listserv). If you would like to visit the listserv directly, you may do so: http://www.dream-tools.com/tools/messages.mv?index+ewrt1cf03.
