Participation and Attendance: Regular class attendance is mandatory. After five absences, the student may be dropped from the class at the instructor’s discretion. Two tardies are considered an absence. Students are expected to do the assigned readings before each session and will frequently be assigned response logs that are designed to prepare students to discuss the readings.
Your grade will reflect only your participation and performance rather than your attendance. Of course, you need to attend class in order to participate. If you attend every class but participate minimally, you will not receive a passing grade for this area. Occasional pop quizzes to measure comprehension, analysis, and details of the readings will also be calculated into the participation grade.
Informal Work and Papers: Throughout the quarter, students will be assigned various exercises (including in-class exams) to prepare them in writing the paper at the end of each unit. These assignments and the final paper are due on the days noted on the paper assignment sheets.
Final Presentation: Students will work in groups of 4-5 and will participate in an oral presentation for the final unit. Details will be provided later in the quarter.
Final Portfolio: At the end of the quarter, students will submit a portfolio containing their best work for the quarter. The portfolio will be a compilation of the student’s best papers, rewrites of papers, a self-evaluation, and so forth. Specific requirements for the portfolio will be announced later in the quarter.
