EWRT1B - Grading breakdown

Close reading skills (30 points)

* Provides a literary analysis of the text(s)
* Incorporates specific quotations and details from the text in support of the thesis
* Does not merely regurgitate class discussion but includes student’s own original thoughts
* Avoids plot summary


Structure (25 points)

* Paper contains a strong thesis statement
* Overall structure of the essay represents an effective attempt to present and support the thesis statement
* Good transitions between paragraphs
* Paragraphs have a clear and logical relationship to each other
* Introduction and conclusion do not merely summarize the paper but add to the argument


Paragraph development (25 points)

* Paragraphs are of appropriate length
* Logical transitions are used to connect sentences
* Paragraphs are internally consistent and coherent
* Clear or implied topic sentences
* Each paragraph contains evidence and development of that evidence.

Effective sentences (30 points)

* No run-on sentences
* Sentences are clear and concise
* Sentences show proper coordination and subordination
* Sentences show proper word choice and usage
* Follows correct pronoun usage
* And so forth...


Proofreading/Logistics/Peer Review (10 points)

* Correct format
* No typographical errors
* Standard spelling and usage
* Meets paper minimum requirement
* Correct documentation
* Participation in writing workshop
* Revisions from writing workshop
