ELIT39 Syllabus (Page 2)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Participation and Attendance: Regular class attendance is mandatory. After four absences, your grade begins to decline by 20 points per class session missed. Two tardies are considered an absence. Students are expected to do the assigned readings before each session and to come prepared to discuss the readings. Your grade will reflect only your participation. Of course, you need to attend class in order to participate. If you attend every class but participate minimally, the highest grade you will receive for participation will be a C.

Quizzes: You can expect occasional unannounced quizzes on literary terms and readings. If you miss a class on the day of a quiz, it cannot be made up.

Formal Paper: There is one formal paper (5-6 pages) that will involve synthesizing a minimum of two texts. The paper's grade will decline by 20 points for each late date. Although your paper will be evaluated heavily on your analysis of the text(s), you will also be expected to write at a college level including an analytical thesis, logical organization, and effective sentences and grammar.

Analysis exercises: Six analysis exercises (1 page each) are due throughout the course of the semester (see Course Schedule for dates). Exercises will be evaluated based on the qualitative content of your analysis rather than your writing skills. Of course you must be able to write well enough that your point is clearly articulated. They must be typed and double spaced. The objective of these assignments is to give you practice in recognizing different structural strategies when reading a text and to discuss critically how these strategies help convey the themes of the text. Your grade declines 5 points for each day the analysis is turned in late.

Option: Instead of the six analyses, you may substitute two formal papers (3 pages each) which will provide an in-depth interpretation of one text each. The paper's grade will decline by 20 points for each late date. Although your paper will be evaluated heavily on your analysis of the text(s), you will also be expected to write at a college level including an analytical thesis, logical organization, and effective sentences and grammar. The due dates for the essays are Thursday, February 6, 2003 and Monday, March 10, 2003.
