Group Presentation Instructions - EWRT1B

DeAnza College - EWRT1B
Winter 2003 - Group Presentation
Instructor: Hearn

Students will work in groups of 3-5. Students are responsible for the reading for that day. All group members must orally participate on the day of the presentation. Groups will facilitate discussion for Mama Day on the assigned date following the format below:

Presentation

  1. Prepare a quiz from 5-7 questions long. Questions could relate to plot, character, or theme. Groups need to find a good balance in terms of types of questions to ask. The point is to cover the significant parts of the passage rather than the small details that might not be remembered by anyone in the class. The objective is to check to see if students have read the passage with a satisfactory level of comprehension.

Groups may present the quiz in the form of an overhead transparency or a copy for each student. Group members will grade the quizzes and submit them to me within three class periods. (The quiz should take approximately 5-7 minutes.)

  2. Prepare a close reading of a passage (a few paragraphs at the most). The group members should be ready to discuss why the paragraph is important to a theme in the novel. Furthermore, the group should address how that theme is conveyed through the language of the passage. (The close reading and presentation should take approximately 7-10 minutes.)

  3. Prepare a set of questions to ask the rest of the class that opens up discussion of the novel. In other words, ask probing questions that are open-ended. You might even have the class freewrite on one of the questions for 5-7 minutes. The questions should be written on an overhead transparency or on the board. (The freewrite and discussion should take approximately 20 minutes).

NOTE: Although the quiz should encompass the entire passage for that class’s meeting, the rest of the presentation does not need to address the entire reading. Instead, the group members may focus on 1-2 themes that they found interesting in the passage. Attempting to address everything in the passage will not lead to a successful presentation.

Assignment

  1. Submit a copy of the quiz, notes on the analysis of the passage (this does not have to be in full paragraph format; it can include bulleted or outlined points), and a copy of the discussion questions. Also include 1-2 paragraphs summarizing what each member of the group contributed to the presentation project. All members must sign that they agree to this summary. The entire assignment should be a maximum of three pages long.

  2. Submit the quizzes with the score at the top within three class days after the presentation day.

Conference

NOTE: Being prepared for your presentation means that you must read ahead of the rest of the class so that you will have covered your group’s passage prior to the presentation date.

All members of the group must meet with me prior to the presentation:

Option #1:     Meet a few days before the presentation to brainstorm different ideas.
Option #2:     Meet at least 2 days before the presentation to review the group’s main plans for
        the presentation.
