Message Board Response Instructions - EWRT1B

For all responses, use the title of the text(s) in the subject line.


Unit 1 – Literary conventions

Post A Select a text and identify three instances of figurative language. Discuss the significance of these examples.
Post B Select two texts (poems and/or short stories) that contain different types of diction. Compare how the use of different diction contributes to the themes of the texts.
Post C Select a short story and discuss how the way the story is told (plot/discourse) contributes to the theme of the story.


Unit 2 – Construction of Gender and Sexuality

Post D Select a text and discuss what the expectations are of certain family members. Compare the text to your own experiences. Did you have any expectations in your own family?
Post E Select a text and discuss how masculinity is being defined by the characters and/or by the text itself.
Post F Select a text and discuss how femininity is being defined by the characters and/or by the text itself.
Post G Select a text and discuss your response to the rewriting of previous myths/tales.
Post H Select a text and discuss what the text is saying about sexual orientation.


Unit 3 – Diversity and Difference

Post I Select a text and discuss how literary devices are used to rewrite history.
Post J Select a text and discuss the relationship that is described between generations.
Post K Select a text and discuss the ways in which a character was/is “innocent” and the ways in which s/he has become more “experienced.”
Post L Select a text and discuss what cultural tensions are being presented.
Post M Select a text and discuss what cultural expectations are being addressed.


Unit 4 – Mama Day

Post N Ask a question about pp. 1-100 of Mama Day and attempt to answer it.
Post O Ask a question about pp. 101-200 of Mama Day and attempt to answer it.
Post P Ask a question about pp. 201-312 of Mama Day and attempt to answer it.
