I. Catalog Information

JOUR 70W Special Projects in Journalism 1 Unit
JOUR 70X 2 Units
JOUR 70Y 3 Units
JOUR 70Z 4 Units

Any combination of JOUR 70 classes may be repeated up to 6 times, not to exceed 18 units, as long as the projects are different each time.

One hour lecture for each unit of credit. Complexity of project determines number of units assigned.

Special research, writing or study projects in Journalism as determined in consultation with the department chair.

II. Course Objectives

The student will:
Examine a special project option in Journalism and create and produce media materials pertaining to the project, or participate in the project activity, after obtaining approval from the Journalism Department Chair.

III. Essential Student Materials

The materials vary with the project.

IV. Essential College Facilities

The type of facility and equipment varies with the topic, but may use a classroom/laboratory equipped as a newsroom: computers with word processing, graphic and page layout software; Internet access; cameras; recorders; telephones; references; basic supplies.

V. Expanded Description: Content and Form

Examine a special project option in Journalism and create and produce media materials pertaining to the project, or participate in the project activity.

Examples of potential special projects include, but are not limited to, the following:

A. Participating in an internship in the journalism or publication industry.
B. Creating instructional materials for the journalism department or the newsroom.
C. Creating a logo, flag and masthead for the student newspaper.
D. Creating a manual on careers in journalism and mass communications.
E. Creating a style manual for student journalism publications.
F. Freelance writing or editing for an external newspaper or magazine.

VI. Assignments

The instructor works with students to develop appropriate assignments for the specific project.

VII. Methods of Evaluating Objectives

Students receive grades based on the quality and appropriateness of their project. Students also prepare a written or oral report upon completion of the project.
