JOURNALISM 63 Effective 2004

I. Catalog Information

JOUR 63 Newspaper Advertising Staff 1 Unit

Prerequisites: None.

Repeatable 6 times, not to exceed 18 units

Three hours laboratory

Experience in advertising as it relates to the college newspaper. Combines functions of advertising and business management. Introduction to advertising sales, design, production and billing.

II. Course Objectives

The student will:

A. Design and create ads, suitable for printing in the college newspaper.
B. Review and practice techniques involved with salesmanship, billing,
advertising design and working with diverse clients and advertising agencies.
C. Work within deadlines.

III. Essential Student Materials

None

IV. Essential College Facilities

A classroom/laboratory equipped as a news room: computers with word processing, graphic and page layout software; Internet access; cameras; telephones; fax machine; references; basic supplies.

V. Expanded Description: Content and Form

A. Design and create ads, suitable for printing in the college newspaper.

1. Column size and cost.
2. Design and layout techniques.
3. Creation using graphics software.

B. Review and practice techniques involved with salesmanship, billing, advertising design and working with diverse clients and advertising agencies.

1. Reviewing forms: rate sheets, order forms, invoices.
2. Telephone procedures.
3. Filing and billing procedures.

C. Work within deadlines.
1. Newspaper publication schedule.
2. Communication with clients and editors.

VI. Assignments

Assignments will encompass areas of newspaper advertising and will vary depending on the student’s focus. Assignments may include creating ads, selling ads, explaining rates to clients, and creating invoices.

VII. Methods of Evaluating Objectives

Students will turn in a two-page paper at the end of the term describing what they’ve learned and accomplished. It will include a log of time spent on advertising assignments, and copies of ads designed.
