JOURNALISM 62 Effective Fall 2004
I. Catalog Information
JOUR 62 Newspaper Freelancing 1 Unit
(May be taken six times for credit.)
Three hours laboratory
Practical experience contributing as a freelancer to the college newspaper as a reporter, copy editor, columnist, graphic artist, photographer or other freelance position.
II. Course Objectives
The student will:
A. Communicate with one or more newspaper editors to obtain assignments.
B. Produce and contribute appropriate journalistic assignments to the college newspaper.
III. Essential Student Materials
Varies with assignment, but may include computer with Internet access, camera or drawing tools.
IV. Essential College Facilities
None.
V. Expanded Description: Content and Form
A. Communicate with one or more newspaper editors obtain assignments.
1. Select assignments from listserv or discussion with editor(s).
2. Suggest assignments to editor(s).
B. Produce and contribute appropriate journalistic assignments to the college newspaper.
1. Report, write, photograph, draw or otherwise contribute to the production of the college newspaper.
2. Turn in assignments in appropriate format and within stated deadline.
VI. Assignments
Students will turn in 4-5 assignments (such as news stories, columns, reviews, photographs with captions, line illustrations, cartoons, informational graphics) or assist with production on 4-5 issues of the newspaper (in such roles as copyeditor or layout/design).
VII. Methods of Evaluating Objectives
Students will turn in a two-page paper explaining what they learned and accomplished during the course, along with copies of the work they submitted to the newspaper.
