JOURNALISM 61 Effective Fall 2004
I. Catalog Information
JOUR 61 Newspaper Staff 3 Units
Prerequisites: Ability to keyboard.
Advisory: JOUR 21A or B
Repeatable 6 times, not to exceed 18 units
Nine hours laboratory
Practical experience in covering and reporting news and features as members of the college newspaper staff. Staff includes reporters, editors, photojournalists and graphic artists.
II. Course Objectives
The student will:
A. Employ journalistic writing, editing, photographic and/or graphic skills to produce the college newspaper.
B. Demonstrate an understanding of the problems and techniques involved in producing a first amendment student newspaper.
C. Recognize and explain basic newspaper terminology and processes.
III. Essential Student Materials
Computer, Internet access.
IV. Essential College Facilities
A classroom/laboratory equipped as a news room: computers with word processing, graphic and page layout software; Internet access; cameras; telephones; fax machine; portable recorders; references; basic supplies.
V. Expanded Description: Content and Form
A. Employ journalistic writing, editing, photographic and/or graphic skills to produce the college newspaper.
1. Complete assignments for publication in the newspaper.
2. Complete assignments by stated deadlines.
B. Demonstrate an understanding of the problems and techniques involved in producing a first amendment student newspaper.
1. Discuss First amendment issues
2. Participate in the newspaper production process
3. Critique newspapers
C. Recognize and explain basic newspaper terminology and processes
1. Apply AP style.
2. Follow ethical guidelines.
3. Gather assignments and electronically file stories.
VI. Assignments
A. One newspaper assignment per issue of the paper which may include, but not be limited to reporting or photographing a story, editing a section of the paper, designing a page or illustrating a concept.
B. Developing a portfolio of completed work.
C. Keeping a log of activities including describing learning experiences and time spent on assignments.
D. Reading about and reacting to journalistic concepts and issues.
VII. Methods of Evaluating Objectives
A. Completion of assignments for the newspaper by deadline.
B. Attendance and participation in class discussions and evaluation sessions.
C. Portfolio of completed work.
D. Quizzes, exams or papers covering concepts from readings and class discussions.
