I. Catalog Information

JOUR 21A News Writing and Reporting 3 Units

Prerequisite: ability to keyboard; English 1A

Three hours lecture

Instruction and practice in reporting and the fundamentals of news writing, with analysis of typical news stories. Concentration on the language and style of news writing; organization and structure of news stories; the lead and the basic story types. Practical writing experience.

II. Course Objectives

The student will:

A. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the fundamentals of news writing and the organization and structure of news stories, including the basics of news gathering and reporting.
B. Gather, organize and synthesize information to compile into news stories and compose these stories. C. Analyze contemporary issues and apply ethical consideration to news writing.
D. Prepare news stories for converging audiences.

III. Essential Student Materials

Computer with word processing software and access to the Internet, portable tape recorder.

IV. Essential College Facilities

Computer lab with access to the Internet.

V. Expanded Description: Content and Form

A. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the fundamentals of news writing and the organization and structure of news stories, including the basics of news gathering and reporting.

4. News writing basics
5. The inverted pyramid
6. Different lede styles
7. Reporting with numbers and statistics
8. Non-sexist and non-discriminatory language

B. Gather, organize and synthesize information to compile into news stories and compose these stories.
1. Interviewing news sources
2. Note taking during the speech, meeting and interview
3. Computer-assisted reporting
4. Using news releases and wire services
5. Selecting and using diverse sources
6. Compiling and editing the story

C. Analyze contemporary issues and apply ethical consideration to news writing.
1. Diversity in reporting (including minorities and women)
2. Media law
3. Media ethics
4. Evaluation and selection of news; principles of news judgment
5. Objectivity and fairness

D. Prepare news stories for converging audiences.
1. Writing for broadcast
2. Writing for PR
3. Writing for the Internet

VI. Assignments
A. Assigned readings from textbook and daily newspaper
B. Writing five news stories
C. Quizzes and in-class assignments and exercises
D. Final exam

VII. Methods of Evaluating Objectives

Evaluation will be based on students’ demonstration of factual knowledge and ability to write accurate news stories suitable for publication.

A. Five news stories turned in on deadline
B. Quizzes on AP style and other areas of news writing
C. In-class and/or homework assignments
D. Class participation
E. Final exam
