Question: Should smoking in movies be eliminated or at least made to look unglamorous?
I. Thesis statement
Smoking is not unusual in popular movies, such as in (insert names of movies here). Experts say that smoking is unhealthy and that actors are role models and when they smoke, they encourage teens and children to start smoking or increase/continue smoking.
II. Arguments for eliminating smoking in movies (you may include more than 2)
A. According to a 2003 study by the Harvard School of Public Health, children who see smoking in movies are 2.7 times as likely to start smoking (source).
B. Researchers have found that behavior is influenced more by exposing children to good behavior than by exposing them to poor behavior and telling them not to do it (source).
III. Arguments against eliminating smoking in movies (you may include more than 2)
A. A study, reported in
the the medical journal Chest, found that, overall, "contemporary American movies do not have a higher prevalence of
smoking than the general U.S. population," and generally smokers in movies are not portrayed as the hero, but as undesirable characters (source).
B. Freedom of speech allows for freedom of artistic expression (Rodman, 489).
