I have often reflected upon the new vistas that reading opened to me.
I knew right there in prison that reading had changed forever the course of my life.
As I see it today, the ability to read awoke in me some long dormant craving to be mentally alive.

c) paraphrase/summarize the author's main points
d) show flexibility in adjusting reading rate to suit purpose and material

ATTENDANCE POLICY

We will be covering a large amount of material in a short amount of time; therefore, regular attendance is extremely important. Absences will affect your success in the course as well as your final grade. If you are absent at any time during the first week of the quarter, you will be dropped from the class. After the first week, if you are absent more than two times, your final grade will be lowered. After three absences, you may be dropped from the class or you may receive a failing grade. Should you decide to stop coming to class, it is your responsibility to submit a drop form to the Registrar's Office, otherwise you may receive a failing grade. If you arrive late to class, or if you leave early, it will count as 1/2 of an absence. If you have a special problem involving an absence, please see me as soon as possible.

HOMEWORK POLICY

You should plan to spend a minimum of ten hours each week preparing for class. You are expected to complete all assigned work before coming to class. No late homework will be accepted. Being absent does not exempt you from turning in homework. If you are absent, you should contact a classmate to find out about missed work and what you need to do to prepare for the next class. Do not contact the instructor for missed assignments.

TESTING POLICY

There will be periodic vocabulary quizzes, four test and a take-home final on the novel. No makeup quizzes or exams will be given. If you miss a quiz or test, you will receive a "0", which will be calculated into your final grade.

PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is cheating; specifically it is presenting someone else's words as your own. Turning in writing that you have copied from another source is not only dishonest, but it is also illegal. If you include phrases, sentences, or passages from other sources (including the internet) in a writing assignment, you must cite the source. Any writing that I suspect is not your own will not receive credit and may result in a failing grade for the quarter.

TUTORING

I encourage you to take advantage of the free tutoring services through the Writing and Reading Center in AT 309 or the Tutoring Center in L 47. You can access both websites under Useful Links to the left.
