Social Identity Barbie

Social identity Barbie

Barbie as an icon of American standards is interesting in that she (as well as her counterpart Ken) is not realistic in their bodily proportions. In her time with Mattel, she has had many incarnations and occupations, including Lifeguard Barbie, Veterinarian Barbie and even Astronaut Barbie. She changes identities as quickly as she can mass produce them. So, your assignment is to create yet another new identity for Barbie, yours.

Create a three dimensional version of you as Barbie (or Ken). Name it for marketing purposes. Make it look like you or represent you. Dress it, color it and create a background for your "self". Then, write a corresponding paper (3-7 pages) describing what you have done and why. Use theory in relation to identity and self, gender and sexuality, and imagery. Explain why you are her, and she is not you.

Fun options for extension: Create a "package" for your "self." Suggest matching accessories. Create a "scene" for yourself. Explain all in your paper.

Turn doll and paper in on or before June 12th, 2007
