ConsciousnessThe nature of consciousness involved various levels of awareness, including during sleep. The evolutionary significance is a matter of debate. That is, we don't exactly know why this works for us. Throw out the question to the class?
Jayne's theory interaction of nature and nurture. Neurobiologivcal and cultural influence.
Foundation of awareness is threefold. All deal with right hemi controlling left during the sleep state 1. Bicameral- right hemi controls left hemi during sleep. Subordinates consciousness of self to control by other source, group, God etc.. 2. Modern - as humans become more independent, individual consciousness occurs. 3. Throwbacks - re-emergence is manifest by schizophrenia, hypnosis, poetic and religious frenzy.
Weil's theory - a. humans have innate drive to experience non-ordinary consciousness, b. experimentation with ways t do this, c. altered states are common (daydreaming etc.), d. psycotropic do not cause altered stes, they merely elicit.
SLEEP:
Non rem stages 1-4 (greek stages). Alpha - drowsy but awake, theta waves transition, delta appear, stage four.
REM Stages are dream states (high brain activity). Rem gets longer and non get shallow. Babies %50, Adults %20. Culture as influence.
Deprivation: Hallucinations, Night terrors, accidents, attempts to shift into REM whenever possible
Insomnia: 1. Difficulty falling asleep, difficulty remaining asleep, persistent early morning awakenings, Diverse causes. Sedatives is not a good idea. Narcolepsy. Apnea. Hypersomnia.
Circadian rhythms. Set by daylight and melatonin.
DREAMS:
Not exotic. What is it? Events and external stimuli, cultural variations
Freud - wish fulfillment
Jung - thinking creatively about personal problems, Superhero phenomenon. Housekeeping phenomenon.
Side effects of neural activation which produce waking states in REM stages. Dreams have no meaning. Random electrical activity
Off- line hypothesis. Time to intergrate old and new information.
