Reality BitesWith all the reality shows that are airing right now I thought it would be fun to put the concepts of social judgement and social perception to the test in relation to these paragons of society.
Watch two or more episodes of any given show. Pick a player with whom you have an affinity, either positive or negative. Tell me:
Which payer you chose and why. What is the affinity, positive or negative. What do you hope happens with your player. Relate these back to attribution theory.
How the schema of the "players" appears to change over the course of the show.
Your judgement of a given player. Does the judgment of others appear to be consistent with yours? How? Is it in the players best interest to appear to be different than s/he really is? Why? Do you think s/he does a good job of this?
Use attribution theory explain the other players reaction to your player.
How does you player use non-verbal behavior to express themselves. Explain this from a theoretic standpoint
How does your player use bias? Are there gender or racial influences which sway the behavior of your player?
Please remember that these questions are guidelines only. Always use theory to explain what you are talking about. Always reference yourself.
Some examples of Reality TV shows are:
THE BACHELORETTE
JOE MILLIONARE
SURVIVOR
HIGH SCHOOL REUNION
CELEBRITY MOLE
THE SURREAL LIFE
