Howl? or Howl!Fraser
Fundamentals of Social Action
Fall 07
The two works that ought to be read and disseminated before attempting to answer these questions in an essay formats are:
Howl, by Allen Ginsberg. Available in PDF form, or via email
Liberalism and Social Action by John Dewey.
Feel free to use outside sources, historic moment and biographical information, as well any or all peer reviewed articles that you can find on the subjects of liberalism, social action or social justice, and or the Beat generation. First explain the main themes as you saw them and how the two works relate or do not relate. Then compare and contrast three of the following within an essay.
Due October 22nd
• Explore scientific methodology and technology in these works
• Do the authors think change is possible? How and or why? Or why not?
• Explore gender, race, age, religion and poverty within these works.
• Identify the mitigating factor of intelligence as a society and within individuals as per these works.
• Is there hope? Is social justice real?
This is a lot. I know this is a lot. Don't panic.
I do not expect an opus, just a work that shows me you understand the works and their reasons for being used within the context of this course. 4-7 pages should do it nicely. Please see “paper and extra credit instructions” for all formatting questions. Please use APA format in all referencing, and please do not use quotes unless citing Ginsberg. All college level standards are in place (i.e. no plagiarism, no lifting etc). Feel free to email me with questions and clarifying arguments.
