Children's Literature Assignment

First read the linked article by Eugie Foster. It is from the point of view of how to write for children, yet gives an overall idea of how to examine the literature of children form an age stage perspective.

The paper should explain your book (A brief paragraph explaining the story - DO NOT re-tell the story). Give the intended age of the reader, and your age when it mattered to you. What is it about the book that made a difference in your life? What stage of development were you in and how does the book aid in that stage? Why did this book matter and what do you remember? Use developmental theorists that can speak to how the book influenced your OWN development. Â Said another way: use theories to show why you took in the book the way you did and how it changed your development.

Through story a reader can confirm one's own life experiences, illuminate and gain insight into those experiences, and vicariously expand and extend them. Although each of us must walk alone, authenticate our experiences, and make our own meanings and sense of truth in the world we know; there is always that tension between the uniqueness of the person and the commonalties of the human condition. This is where theory comes in. It defines the commonalties of the development we all feel as a culture, a cohort, and a generation.

Now that you have had a chance to read and hear about developmental theory in relation to intelligence, language, literature, cognition, social development etc, I want you to now explain to me why the book you originally choose had such an impact on your life. Who were you when you read this book? Why this book? And how do you think it impacted or didn’t impact you as you grew. Did you trade in this book for another? Which one? And what was it about the second book that spoke to you. E.g. most of us moved on to young adult literature. Some didn’t. Originally you were asked for one to three pages. Here you will expand the paper to five to seven pages. With more theory, you are now asked for theory and application literature, your own development, how you think literacy education cognition etc influence your development and how it is still affected in your college education. You will use the theory that comes from Developmental Psychology , literacy advances, gender issues, etc to further understand what it is about this story that makes it unique to you, and/or universally understood and loved.

Attach the Children's Lit Handout to the top of the paper. (Do not hand write it. Make sure it is word processed) Make sure your name is on it. Use references (cite the original source) use APA format. Please use formal theory to explain yourself and the stages of development discussed, Do not use Times New Roman, and make sure it is 12 pt font, double spaced.

This paper is worth 25 points and should be no longer than five pages, not including references and the handout.
