Research Projects

Project Descriptions

In Dr. Fraser’s lab, three research projects have been underway for a few months. Completion all of them are occurring and help is need in the final stages. One of the most exciting things about completion of a project is seeing what comes next. Thus, new projects will be developed as a part of the cumulation

DATING SKILLS

Dating Skills Satisfaction among College Students is a study that investigates how college students view their dating skills. The initiation of a first date is critical to this evaluation, so the survey investigates initiation of a first date, the self-identification of gender role assignments, and how the two correlate. Because this survey is a take off from earlier research, it is already in progress and has no need of RAs. If this is your interest, there will be off shoots form the original study, so indicate this study as your preference. Thus the only possibility for this study is literature review or brain trust

EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE A HERO:

A study involving the psychology of Heroism began last year: Assistants/interns will be taken through each phase of a research study using survey methodology. Weekly and sometimes bi-weekly meetings will be held to keep the study on track and all students will learn a variety of research skills, as well as team skills. We began with the discussion of the issues, the collection of relevant literature and moved into the development of a methodology (ies).

The second phase was the collection of data, the appropriate input of data. We are now the analysis of data will be performed, and the initial write-up phase with articles finished and presented for possible publication in academic journals.

Jobs needed for this study are brain trust, editor and literature reviewer. Possible co-authorships available.

HOW WE SEE HEROES:
Children are usually our best measuring stick in terms of how our mythology gets incorporated in to everyday life. Whether the concept of the Hero is Kim Possible or Dad, our ideals of human behavior come from this viewpoint. We have data from 277 children, ages 4-12, and their answers to some very simple questions: who is your hero and who is the most powerful persona in the world. This is great pilot data stuff, but is correlative in nature only. It serves as a jumping off point to investigate how our hero mythology gets served to us via the media, and how we interpret that information as children first, and as adults later. This project serves as a twin to the EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE A HERO project. Working in tandem, we may be able to tease out some interesting attitudes about Heroes.

We used further data on adolescents asking the same questions. Adolescents ages were form the ages of 13-18, and we have equal amounts of data in regards to this. Our investigation now goes into cultural representations of heroes as seen from the development of moral codes.

Jobs needed for this study are brain trust, editor and literature reviewer. Possible co-authorships available.

SOCIAL NETWORKS:

In the 05/06 school year, a study in conjunction with the Presidents Office presided over the lab. Over a thousand students were surveyed as to their attitudes about academic issues and social networks. Much rich data has emerged in the final analysis of this study. Conversation around these ideas and where to go next is the agenda for this study.

All jobs needed.
