reasoning in space

You can chose to one or the other of these assignments. Both are fun and will produce some interesting results. Should you decide to, you can do both. If you chose to do this, clearly mark the one you decide is to be your completion of this assignment, and the other is to be clearly marked as your extra credit.

MENTAL MAPS

Stanley Milgram has proposed the concept of psychological maps to study people’s perceptions of the city environment. You can adapt this technique to gain some insight into how people perceive your college campus (or the local mall, or your workplace). The emphasis needs to be on how the person perceives the location, not geographical accuracy.

First draw your own map of the location. Then select two to three others of your acquaintance. Try to make these people different in their perspectives of the world. (For the campus try athlete, scholar: for the mall try Barbie doll, mom, and athlete: for the workplace, try a manager and an underling. Remember that these are suggestions only). Ask these people to draw their own maps of the location that you have selected. Do not let them see any of the other maps before they draw their own, and do not tell them the purpose of this assignment.

Are there certain landmarks or boundaries that are included on all maps? If so, what are they?

Are certain parts of the location over represented on the maps or drawn in more detail than other parts? If so, so these special parts of the map reflect the interest of the particular mapmaker?

Explain the results of the physical maps in relation to decision that this person makes, or the problems that they solve. Ask them which stores routes etc, they chose when coming or going to this location. Ask them why. Explain the discrepancies and similarities of the result sin cognitive terms using decision making and problem solving theory. Milgram’s idea of mental maps is okay to use as well, and anything else that you think might be relevant.

Let me know if there are questions.

Use decision making and problem solving theory to explain the business set-up as well as how parent might perceive the store. Also use gender and individual differences in schema as a theory.
