Features Cog 1
Limitations to the classical approach to categories can be illustrated easily. Compose lists of necessary and sufficient features to define the following ordinary concepts:
1. an even number
2. a cousin
3. a college student
4. a square
Now ask five other people (who are independent and not in the same room) the same questions. Note if there is a difference or similarity among the features. Define in your paper presentation the features necessary for a prototype.
Do the same thing for the following concepts:
1. a republican
2. a feminist
3. a literary "classic"
4. a "good" college course
There may be difficulty with the second list as well as some disagreement as to which features are necessary and which are sufficient.
Include in your 3-5 page paper (due the 23rd of September)
1. What you did (the design of the study)
2. How you did it (data collection)
3. Why you did it (hypothesis)
4. What happened ( results)
5. And finally at least a page and a half on why you think this happened. Use theories from the book as well as what you learn in class. Reference everything. Use APA format.
