For a Day
Many Third Wave theorists argue that gender is something that you do, not what you are. Negotiating gender in our everyday interactions often are dictated by the social climate in which we find ourselves. According to this perspective, men and women behave according to scripts , most of which revolve around cultural assumptions regarding the essential nature of men and women (as well as the assumed norm of heterosexuality). Thus doing gender often means adjusting one's behavior to suit the social expectations for one's sex.
Imagine that you are the other gender for a day. Twenty Four hours of participating in the rituals and superstitions of the opposite sex. (Not necessarily the stereotypes). Loved hated and played with, genitalia are an example of our ideas of the mundane and the transcendent ideology of gender. That is, we often promote our ideas of the other gender based on genitalia and the rituals involved with the same. What are the superstitions that you have about gender in association with the genitalia you DON"T have. This piece can rang from a rant to a list of activities that you may participate in to poetry or fiction. Cartoons with commentary are appropriate as well. In other words, you have free reign. The only requirements are to keep to the subject at hand (no random rambles) try to keep it to statements (and not sexual fantasies), and remember to:
RELATE YOUR FINDINGS TO THE CLASS: Use references where appropriate. Always use theory
oh yeah: and don't hurt anyone or do anything that may hurt yourself. Be a punk, but be careful.
