General Psychology
This class attempts to explain human behavior by examining it from neurological, biological, social, and internal mechanisms.
It is taught from a social science standpoint and uses the socratic method in the examination of theory where appropriate.
A note of caution: Your English language skills, both written and spoken, should be at a level of proficiency that is consistent with a transferable college level course. Make no mistake about this. You are expected to perform at the level of a freshman in any four year university in the United States. This course is transferable and you will not pass if your language is not at this level. If you feel that you need some extra help in this area, my advice is to take a lower level English skills course for one quarter before attempting General Psychology. This is a difficult course at any institution, no matter who teaches it. There is a large quantity of information that you are expected to master. The baseline will not be lowered in this regard, no matter the reason.
An Honors cohort is being offered in this section. If you are in the
Honors Program you are welcome to participate in the cohort, and if you are not in the Honors Program but are eligible for the program, you are also welcome to participate as long as you have not taken an Honors class from De Anza previously. Eligibility requirements can be found at www.deanza.edu/honors or you may contact Lydia Hearn Madden at dahonors@deanza.edu.
The honors cohort entails additional work consisting of two extra assignments of three to five pages each. In order to earn an Honors designation for this class on your transcript. You must commit to participating in the Honors cohort by the fourth week of the quarter by submitting a signed cohort contract to the Honors Program office. You may download a form from the Honors website. Once you commit to the Honors portion, you will be expected to complete the extra work. Failure to complete the Honors work will result in a lowering of your regular class grade.
You will note that some of the dates on the outline are linked to the actual outline I will be using in lecture. Please feel free to print these out and use them as study guides if you would like to.
