Pick a sentence or a short passage from one of Haslett's stories and type it in your response box. Then try to explain how that quotation relates to what you think is the theme of Haslett's story.
================================
"I, on the other hand, am perfectly lucid." From NOTES TO MY BIOGRAPHER, Adam Haslett
Frank Caldwell Singer believes everyone else is wrong, and he is right.
It's much harder to admit to ourselves that we have problems than it is to find problems in others. I deal with many people, and not all of them are people I would consider 'balanced.' If those folks were to tell me that I had a problem, I doubt I'd listen.
Haslett's story makes an interesting point. If someone is mentally unbalanced, then it is highly unlikely they have the mental capacity to see that fact. After all, how would we know if we needed help? How would we know if we weren't all going crazy?
Despite Frank's son urging him to go see a doctor and receive medication, Frank believes he is fine and as he says... perfectly lucid.
