Music 14A Spring '11 Tentative Schedule

Here's a tentative schedule for the class. Treat each week's scheduled material  like a checklist for each time you sit down to practice; don't spend the entire 30 minutes (or more) on one or two things--touch on several items each time you sit down to practice, including studying the textbook. Happy practicing!
Week 1
  • Rhythm reading:  exercises from Classical Guitar for Beginners, p. 11
  • Introduce free strokes with "P" (right hand thumb),  p.13
  • Pitch reading, playing on the open 5th and 6th strings--Begin "Reading on the 5th and 6th Strings"
  • Learn proper left-hand technique, p.14
  • Begin left-hand warm-up exercise: Chromatic scale, left hand walking (in-class demo, no handout)
  • Assignment: Note speller 1 due week two Tues/Thus class.
Week 2: Holiday,  Monday, Jan 16
  • Note speller 1 Due at the start of class Wednesday/Thursday
  • Review rhythm reading
  • Review right-hand technique: free strokes with "p"
  • Add notes on the frets of 5th and 6th strings,  p.15
  • Continue "Reading on the 5th and 6th Strings"
  • Begin chord playing and strumming: C, G7

Week 3:

Week 4: Mid-term exam, all classes: Tues, Wed class Scheduled class cancellation Thurs, March 2.
  • Written: parts of the guitar, notation and notes we've learned, "How to Practice," names of fingers on both hands, tuning, free strokes with right hand fingers
  • Playing: TBA
Classwork
  • Work on A, D, E7 Begin "Blues Playin' Blues"
  • Continue 4th String--all pieces from pages 18-19 (Tues)
  • Continue open string exercises with "p"
  • Turn in late Note Speller 2 at start of class Monday, Tuesday
  • Begin free strokes with i-m
Week 5:
 Classwork
  • Continue practicing all exercises
  • Begin Adagio (p. 19)
  • Begin reading on 2nd and 3rd strings, free strokes with i and m ("catching the butterfly" technique): Ex. 9-11
  • Begin Blues Playin' Blues--"swinging" strum, syncopation
  • Begin Dots and Ties exercises
  • Note Speller 3 assigned
  • Tues/Wed last date to turn in Note Speller 2 for 1/2 credit.
Week 6:
  • Continue reading on 2nd and 3rd strings, free strokes with i and m ("catching the butterfly" technique): Ex. 9-11
  • Continue Dots and Ties
  • Continue Adagio (p. 19)
  • Begin Aria, p. 23
  • Chord Progressions: the I-IV-I-V7 progression. Continue Blues Playin' Blues, swing, syncopation; Transpose to D major
  • Note Speller 3 due Wednesday, Thursday
  • Begin two voice reading, p. 25
  • Begin Country Dance (p. 26)
Week 7: Presidents' Day Holiday, Monday, Feb 20--no class
  • Last day to turn in Note Speller 3 for 1/2 credit (due at start of class) Tues, Wed
  • Continue Country Dance
  • Begin Accidentals, p. 24: Theme from Fugue in A minor, Lagrima, Theme from Forlorne Hope Fancy
  • Begin Chapter 4: Shifting up the Neck, p. 28.
  • Note Speller 4 assigned--Due Monday, Tuesday of week 8
