changes to CPR/AED pro rescuer text

Make this correction, if needed, to your text: on page 4 in the section about which states have Good Samaritan laws, change "All the 50 states..." to "The vast majority of states and the District of Columbia..."

On page 28, at step 2, add this: "if you are alone and have no way to immediately call 911, see page 18 about the decision to make to either call first or give care first."

The text does not make it clear what to do if you are helping a conscious choking adult who becomes unconscious. If you look at page 37 in the student book, at the end you will see that it says "if the victim becomes unconscious, go to- ...page 40."

But at page 40 the first step is to try rescue breaths. The actual next step is from the FAQs section in the instructor CD:

"If the victim becomes unconscious, carefully help the victim to the floor. The check for an object in the mouth. If the object is visible, remove it with a finger. Whether or not an object is removed, begin using a modified CPR technique for an unconscious choking victim."

Write in your text on page 37 next to "if the victim becomes unconscious," carefully help the victim to the floor. The check for an object in the mouth. If the object is visible, remove it with a finger. Then go to the steps on page 40.

It is now okay to use an AED on an infant, but the textbook you got might have not been updated.

Page 55, after step 10, add a bullet to "Continue CPR until-"

"An AED becomes available and ready to use"

Page 60, after step 12, add a bullet to "Continue CPR until-"

"An AED becomes available and ready to use"

Page 63, bottom of left hand column, section heading should read:

"Using and AED - Child and Infant"

Page 63, toward the top of right hand column now reads "...children between 1 and 8 years of age...", should read

"children or infants up to 8 years of age..."

Page 64, near top of left hand column, 5th bullet point on this page should read

"Do not use an AED and/or pads designed for adults on a child or infant under age 8..."

Page 67, step 9, 3rd bullet should read

"For a child or infant..."

Page 68, 1st bullet on this page, the phrase "If the pads risk touching..." should read

"If the pads risk touching or if using on an infant..."

Page 70, step 9, 3rd bullet should read

"For a child or infant..."

Page 71, 1st bullet on this page, the phrase "If the pads risk touching..." should read

"If the pads risk touching or if using on an infant..."

Pages 63-72 in general...

...Anywhere the word child appears it may be assumed to mean child or infant

...Anywhere the word child's appears it may be assumed to mean child's or infant's
