History of the U.S. to Early National Era

United States civilization to early National Era. A survey of the social, cultural, political, economic and intellectual development of the Colonial Era with emphasis on the era of the American Revolution, the development of the Constitution, and the role of the major ethnic, social and gender groups in the American experience. The role of the frontier on colonial and national cultures will also be examined.

PREREQUISITES
Eligibility for EWRT 1A or ESL 5 advised.

  1. Attend the Orientation Meeting on Monday, April 7, 8:30 - 9:30 PM, in MQ-5, OR complete the Online Orientation and submit the Student Information Form online by Friday, April 11, 12:00 Noon. (Online Orientation may be found at: http://distance.deanza.fhda.edu/Orientation.html) Pre-registered students who do not attend the Orientation Meeting or complete the online orientation by noon Friday, April 11 will be dropped to make room for others on the waitlist. The last day to add the class (if seats are available): Friday, April 18.
  2. View the twelve half-hour video programs.
  3. Read the text as required and any other assigned readings and study materials.
  4. Take and pass the three examinations.

OBJECTIVES

The overriding goal of this course is for you to gain a thorough understanding of this nation's history. Such an understanding will develop an ongoing appreciation for the complex pieces of the body politic and assist in an ongoing assessment of the social and cultural effects of historical events on mainstream and marginalized groups and individuals. Critical analysis of the materials under study is essential for the fulfillment of other goals.
  1. You will be able to acquire and retain a broad factual knowledge concerning the period under study.
  2. You will understand the various interpretations of important issues in American history.
  3. You will be able to apply relevant historical models of the past to some present-day issues of significance.

WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS

As you begin to study the materials, read each chapter twice. The following order is advised.

Work on the lessons in the following order:
  1. Read the assigned chapters in the text.
  2. Now watch the video program(s). Don't take notes while viewing!
  3. Read and review the chapter and any other assigned readings.
The primary course content comes from the readings. The videotape programs are intended to emphasize and illustrate the reading material. If, for any reason, you miss watching a video program during the assigned week, you should still keep current with your reading assignments.

REVIEW MATERIAL FOR EXAMS

Attend the Lecture/Review Sessions

The instructor reviews the course assignments and helps you prepare for the examinations. Past experience has shown that students who attend these review sessions have a better grasp of the course material and score higher on their exams.

TESTING AND GRADING

Exam #2: Wednesday, May 21, 7:30 - 8:50 PM, E-35.
(Exam #2 Covers Chapters 4- 6 and Video Programs 5-8)

Exam #3: Wednesday, June 25, 8:30 - 9:50 PM, E-35.
(Exam #3 Covers Chapter 7 to Chapter 9 (pp. 286-296)

Testing Materials: Bring a Scantron Answer Form, a photo I.D., and a #2 pencil to each scheduled exam.

Alternate Exams: If you are unable to take the exam on the scheduled date and time, you must inform the instructor prior to the in-class test date by email only. Make sure to identify yourself by name in the e-mail. Failure to do so will prevent the student from taking the alternate exam. Alternate exams may consist of essay questions. You must complete the exams by the alternate dates listed below.

Alternate Exam #1: Wednesday, April 30
Alternate Exam #2: Wednesday, May 21

There is NO Alternative Exam for Exam #3.

Procedures: If you choose to take an alternate exam, simply go to the Instructional Testing Office on the alternate date and ask for the exam. The Instructional Testing Office is located in Room LC-123. You will need to show your Photo I.D. to the testing proctor. . The alternate exam may be longer, and it may consist only of essay questions. Bring a Blue Book and a ParScore Answer Form with you. None will be provided to you by the college.

Grading: Exam scores are posted by a secondary I.D. (roster PIN) number in the display cases located outside by the Distance Learning Center back door (facing the California History Center) approximately nine days after the scheduled exam.

Final Grade:
Your final grade is based upon the grades you receive from the two exams. The final grade is simply the average of the three exams.
A = (90-100%)
B = (80-89%)
C = (70-79%)
D = (60-69%)
F = (Below 60%).
