PREREQUISITES Math 112 or Math 212 earning a C or better, qualifying score on De Anza’s Math Placement, ACT, SAT or 1 year of high school algebra.

DESCRIPTION
This course contains topics such as rational, logarithmic and exponential functions and equations, graphs, sequences and series and mathematical real world applications. This course relies on internet access for the information, assignments and communication.

COURSE IMPLEMENTATIONThis course is implemented by blending on-campus learning with on-line learning. Using an on-line software called mathzone you will be able to use a lot of on-line resources to learn the material and earn points toward your grade. Some homework, quizzes and practice tests will not count in your grade. They are the topics that usually go well and that I feel book problems will suffice. Other sections/quizzes that typically cause some difficulty are assigned for credit in mathzone. You will also have the opportunity to take practice exams on-line and then an exam on-line (any time within 2 days) that counts in your grade and should help you with the exam on campus. The practice exam on-line does not count in your grade but should be helpful.

Mathzone accounts for 25% of your grade and can be done wherever you wish (please see technical requirements for mathzone below). In class quizzes count for 25% of your grade. Each week you will take two quizzes, one by yourself and one in a group. Since I am very aware of group work problems, I have decided to create groups based on the amount of homework completed. Although your quiz alone will typically be announced beforehand, the group quiz typically will not. Each day homework will be assigned and problems can be looked up on the link below(see book problems). Usually at the beginning of each class I will ask if you have any book or mathzone questions. At that time I would like you to write the answer in to your homework paper if you did not get it before class. If we are having a group quiz, I will collect homework based on whether it is complete, half complete or barely done at all. If you did complete your homework you will be grouped with others that completed their homework and so on. If for some reason this does not work for you after a couple of sessions please contact me to voice your concern.

TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENT: Please see the list of system requirements for MathZone at http://mhhe.com/support. If you are not able to view pictures or graphs hit the help tab in mathzone, you will need to download something. If you are not able to solve your problem with the on-line help contact mathzone at 1-800-331-5094.

If your computer does not have the necessary hardware you may work at school either in the S42, S44 or S48 (the Math Lab) or the Open Media Lab. For open hours for the Math Lab http://nebula.deanza.edu/PSME_Divison/Computer_Labs.html and click on the 3 labs for Fall 2009 open times. There are also hours listed on each of the doors a few weeks into the quarter.

ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Having taught Intermediate Algebra using several books and techniques, I can offer the following advice:

1. Contact me to get help once you are experiencing difficulty.
2. Maintain a neat, organized notebook. Correct any homework, quizzes and exams for review and future use.
3. Take practice exams prior to each exam.
4. Use available resources to get help immediately, do not put it off. You may get free, on-campus tutoring. For more detail go to http://www.deanza.edu/studentsuccess/tutorial/

MATHEMATICAL SYMBOLS THAT MAY BE USED ON MATHZONE When emailing over the listserv use the following symbols: Symbol Meaning * Multiplication ex: 3*5=15 ^ Exponential ex: 3^2 = 9 / Division ex 10/5 =2 Note: Placement of parenthesis is crucial. For instance: (3+12)/(3+2) = 3 BUT ((3+12)/3) + 2 = 7 BE CAREFUL!

DUE DATES
The due date for all homework assignments and quizzes in mathzone is 12/8, HOWEVER you should not wait b/c the homework and quizzes are used to prepare you for your exams! Please follow the Book/Mathzone schedule. That schedule will keep you on track.
