English 17

Introduction to Shakespeare

This course introduces students to the poems and plays of William Shakespeare.  Known as "the Bard of Avon," Shakespeare is widely believed to be the best writer in the English language. We will sample some of his sonnets and study one example each of the dramatic genres in which he wrote--comedy, tragedy, history, and romance--giving us a well-rounded introduction to this multi-faceted and highly-entertaining writer. To help us understand the work more fully, we will also study the language, history, customs, and culture of the Elizabethan era, the lively and politically-charged world in which Shakespeare lived.

And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances
And one man in his time plays many parts."
