English 30Introduction to Creative Writing
This course focuses on imaginative writing: fiction, poetry, and drama. We study the contours of each genre, looking closely at representative samples from contemporary literature. Then we write our own original stories, poems, and plays. Each student presents his or her work to the class both in print and in oral presentation. Thus, the class operates on two levels: (1) as a traditional course in the genres (or modes) of literature, and (2) as a writer's workshop in which professor and classmates offer constructive criticism with the aim of improving our writing.
"Let the beauty we love be what we do."
