English 11Introduction to Poetry
This course introduces students to the art of poetry by examining its literary elements in a wide array of poems written in English. We study examples by mostly modern poets; however, our study also includes some ancient, medieval, and renaissance work. We also explore poetry in translation, including an in-depth study of a single poet of global reputation. Along the way we test our growing knowledge by taking quizzes, keeping a reading journal, and writing analytical papers. The course reaches its culmination in a research project on a major poet of the student's choice.
