Create new web pages

In Manila, web pages are called stories. To create a new web page (or "story"):

  1. Log in to your web site if you have not already done so.
  2. Click on the Stories link in the Editors Only menu at the top of the page.
  3. On the Stories page click on the Create A New Story link.
  4. Give your story a title and then type your story text.
  5. Click Post New Story when finished or when you want to save changes.
  6. Return to the page and click the Edit This Page button as needed.

Create links to pages inside and outside your web site

To create a link to an outside web site:
  1. Type the full URL (including the HTTP part) into the page. This works for web sites, email addresses, etc.
or, in the WYSIWYG editor...
  1. Type the text  that you would like to make clickable.
  2. Select the text.
  3. Click the Link button in the format bar.
  4. Type in the complete URL and then OK.
To link to a page within your web site:
  1. Go to the page where you wish to create the clickable link.
  2. Type in the title of the web page you wish to link to.
  3. Place quotation marks around this text.
The Manila Shortcuts feature provides another way to create and manage links. In fact, Manila automatically creates a shortcut to every new story, picture, or file you create on your site. The titles of these resources can be placed within quotation marks on any page at your site in order to...
  • turn the title of a story into a clickable link
  • insert a picture into any page
  • insert a link to a file into any page
You can create your own shortcuts to pages within your web site and to other web sites.

To create a shortcut to a page within your web site:
  1. Go to the page you wish to link to.
  2. While viewing that page click the Shortcuts link in the Editors Only menu.
  3. Information about the page you just left will appear on the next  Shortcuts page.
  4. Edit or replace the title of this shortcut as you wish.
  5. Click the Add New Shortcuts button.
  6. You may not include the text you entered in the title field in step 4 above. Just place it in quotes on any other page at your web site to create a link to the page.
To create a link to an outside web site;
  1. Click on the Shortcuts link on any page at your web site.
  2. Replace the text on the Shortcuts page with the title and URL of the outside web site. (Be sure to use the full URL, starting with http.)
  3. Click the Add New Shortcuts button.
  4. Now you may use this new shortcuts title within quotation marks anywhere on your site, and a link to the outside resource will be created.

Add images to the site

You can include any .jpg or .gif image in pages of your web site. You must have a copy of the image on your computer and move it to the server using the Pictures feature of Manila.
  1. Go to your site and log in if you have not already done so.
  2. Make sure that a suitable version of the image is stored on your hard drive.
  3. Click the Pictures link in the Editors Only menu.
  4. Click the Create a New Picture link
  5. Give your picture an easy-to-remember title (for your use).
  6. Click the Browse button to locate the file on your computer.
  7. Add some descriptive text.
  8. Click Post New Picture.
You may now insert your picture into any page on your web site by typing the title you gave it (step 5 above) within quotation marks.

Upload files

You may upload any file to your web site using the Files feature. The process of uploading is essentially the same as that for uploading a picture. (Slight differences will be described during training session.) A link to the file is created by placing its title within quotation marks.

Virtually any type of file may be uploaded to your site and then downloaded by site visitors, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, mp3, mov, pdf, and so on. Site visitors will need to have the appropriate program for viewing the file installed on their computers.

Before you can upload the file you must create it and save it on your computer. Once you have done this, the following procedure is followed:
  1. Click the Files link in the Editors Only menu.
  2. Click the Upload a New File link on the next page.
  3. Give your file a Manila name in the title box. Typically, choose something that will be descriptive for you. Visitors to the site will generally not need to know or see this name.
  4. Click the Browse button to locate and select the file you wish to upload.
  5. Click the Post New File button to make the file available on your site.
You may now place the title (that you created in step 3 above) within quotation marks on any page of your site. A link to download the file will automatically be created, and users who click the link will receive a copy of the file on their computers

Using the news items option to create a blog-style site

Manila's can be configured to create blog style web site. Blogs typically feature frequent updates, often linking to outside resources, that are presented in reverse chronological order on the home page. Blog style web sites can be much more interesting to visitors because the site content changes frequently.

To change you web site to a blog style "news items" site do the following:
  1. Go to your site and log in.
  2. Click the Prefs link in the Editors Only menu at the top of the window.
  3. On the next page, click News Items in the sidebar.
  4. On the News Items page, click the "yes" box near the top of the page (next to the question: "Do you want the News Items feature enabled?")
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Submit button.
To add a new News Item to your site after activating the News Items feature:
  1. Go to your site and log in.
  2. Click on the News link in the Editors Only menu at the top of the window.
  3. On the Pending News Items page, click Create a News Item.
  4. On the Create News Items page, give your news item a title and then write the text of the entry in the main text box. For now, the other fields are optional. Click the Create News Item button at the bottom of the page.
  5. Review your News Item text on the next page and edit if necessary.
  6. Click the Post to Home Page button to add the news item to your home page.
