Text: CFM, Mathematics in Action; An Introduction to Algebraic, Numerical, and Graphical Problem Solving. (PRELIMINARY EDITION: – BLUE COVER) Addison, Wesley, Longman Publishers. ISBN 0-201-66041-5
Related Materials: A graphing calculator (TI 83 or TI 86) is recommended. We will use special software in the lab (no cost to the student)
Attendance: Regular, punctual attendance at all class meetings is expected of each student. Students absent anytime during the first 2 weeks of class will be dropped unless they contact the instructor. Each tardy will count as half an absence. A student may be dropped from the class if absent the equivalent of 280 minutes (one week), no matter what the reason.
Homework: Homework is assigned in two ways, by computer and by hand. Homework by computer is graded automatically. Homework by hand is graded by the teacher and the student is expected to show his/her work. By consistently doing the homework, you, the student, learn the most. Do not fall behind! Complete all homework assignments and ask questions.
Quizzes: Quizzes are indicated on the calendar and are based on the homework. Missed quizzes cannot be made up for any reason. At the end of the quarter, your lowest quiz score will be dropped. You may use by hand homework on the quiz.
Activities: This is an activity based class. Thus, there will be in-class group activities. Part of the activities may need to be completed outside of class. Activities will total 100 points. No late activities will be accepted.
Exams: Three exams will be given worth 100 points each. Exam dates are on the calendar. No make-up exams will be given for any reason. All exams are closed book, closed notes unless otherwise stated.
Final Exam: There will be a 2-hour final exam worth 100 points. The exam is comprehensive. Students who miss the final exam without contacting the instructor by the day of the exam will receive a grade of F. No incompletes will be given for missing the final exam. The final exam time is on the calendar and taken at the scheduled time during finals week.
Assignments and points are as follows:
- 3 midterms @ 100 points =300 points
- 1 final exam @ 100 points =100 points
- homework =100 points
- 6 quizzes @ 20 points =100 points (lowest dropped)
- Activities =100 points
Grades are assigned as follows:
- Point Calculation:
- Total Points = 700 points
- 90 - 100% A: from 630 to 700 points
- 80 – 89% B: from 560 to 629 points
- 70 – 79% C: from 490 to 559 points
- 60 – 69% D: from 420 to 489 points
- 0 – 59% F: below 420 points
How to get help: Student may receive tutorial assistance from the instructor during office hours. Please come by for help or to talk about your grade. That is what I am there for! Tutors are also available in E36. Students are strongly encouraged to make use of the tutorial help available and to form study groups and work outside of class together whenever possible.
Other:
- Anyone caught cheating on a test or quiz will receive an automatic 0 and be reported to the Dean of the PSME Division. Those caught twice will be expelled from the class with a grade of F.
- Turn off Cell Phones and Beepers during class. If one goes off during a quiz or test and I know who the student is, I will take the quiz or test.
- Disruptions during class will not be tolerated.
- From the Dean of Counseling: Change of Grade Requests include only the following options:
- Wrong bubble was marked on the scantron
- arithmetic error in calculation of total grade points
total points were incorrectly evaluated
- student should not have appeared/was missing on the final grade roster
- miscommunication regarding who would initiate the withdrawl
- confusion of student names
- some portion of the student's work was omitted from the grade calculation
instructor missed deadline for change of incomplete
- Dropping the Course (from Admissions and Records)
- The first three weeks of the quarter, students can drop using the STAR System or over the Internet (up through the Last Day to Drop with No Record listed in the Schedule of Classes). After that date, students must go to Admissions and Records to drop.
- After the last day to drop with a "W" - if a student tells the Admissions and Records clerk that they never attended a class, they will be given a Blue Addendum Form and directed to contact the instructor for that class. (If the student attended even one class, they must follow the process above or the process below, whichever applies.)
- After the last day to drop with a "W" - if the student wishes to drop and has attended a class or missed the Withdraw date, they are given a Petition to the Academic Council to complete.
