Arabic LanguageNOTE: Intensive Summer Arabic will be offered at De Anza. Two quarters will be covered in 6 weeks (from June 30 to August 8).

Focus of first year course:
--development of accuracy and fluency in pronunciation of Arabic letters and sounds
--mastery of reading and writing both printed and handwritten Arabic
--understanding spoken Modern Standard Arabic
--acquisition of reading and writing comprehension of basic vocabulary
--knowledge of culturally appropriate social greetings and other expressions (in colloquial Arabic)
--ability to describe and identify (orally and in writing) places, objects, friends, and family, activities, and daily living.
--knowledge of language structure (grammar)
--study of the culture of and diversity in the Arabic-speaking world

The CDs that accompany the book are used to give added stress to the oral component of the course and are required. The video for Alif Baa’ provides Egyptian colloquial conversations to illustrate social interactions and appropriate greetings. Each lesson in Al-Kitaab begins with the video, as the students get to know the college students Maha and Khalid and their families.
As of Fall 2001, Arabic was accepted for UC transfer credit.
