Course Description

This course offers a general introduction to basic word processing skills. It is a course designed for the new Word 2002 user. This course can be completed entirely online. You will use WebCT, which is an online course management tool used by many institutions for professional training. You may complete all assignments at home or at work. You will never need to come to campus to complete this course. Directions for all assignments will be given online or via e-mail. Your assignments will be submitted through the WebCT Assignment Dropbox. Quizzes and tests will be taken online. You will communicate with your instructor via e-mail.

Prerequisites CAOS 90G Computer Literacy (IBM) or CAOS 100G Orientation to the IBM PC or equivalent; CAOS 70AA Elementary Keyboarding or equivalent; CAOS 102L Microsoft Windows XP is recommended.

A Message from Your Instructor

Welcome to the Word 2002 online class. I look forward to working with you and hope you have an enjoyable online experience. I will guide your learning and assist you in understanding the basic principles of Word 2002. It is essential that you have some experience using e-mail and Internet browsers in order to successfully complete this course.

Whenever you have questions about the course or a particular exercise or assignment, please contact me. Use my e-mail account. It will be the fastest way to communicate with me. I try to check my e-mail on a regular basis.

Course Requirements

Be prepared to spend at least 4 hours per week using and studying course materials and participating in online activities. Complete the Online Orientation and submit the Student Information Form by noon on Friday, January 12. The Online Orientation can be found at: http://distance.deanza.fhda.edu/Orientation.html E-mail your instructor no later than Monday, April 16 introducing yourself and indicating which browser you will be using for your course. Internet Explorer is recommended. Some browsers may not work with WebCT.

Complete reading assignments. Complete chapter exercises. Complete and submit all required assessments by due dates Complete online Theory Tests (2) with a minimum score of 70% per test.

Hardware/Software Requirements

You must have access to an IBM/PC compatible computer with an Internet connection and a CD/ROM drive. You cannot use a Macintosh computer for this class. You must have your own e-mail address. Your Internet browser must either be Netscape or Internet Explorer. If your Internet provider is AOL, that's okay. You can logon to the Internet with AOL. However, use Internet Explorer as your browser. Do not use AOL's default browser; you'll have problems using WebCT. You must have access to the Microsoft Word 2002 (XP) software.

Items listed below can be purchased at De Anza Bookstore. Required Text: Microsoft WORD 2002, Benchmark Series, N. Rutkosky, ISBN: 0-7638-1458X.

Logon to the Word Online Website

Enrolled students are required to follow the directions below to logon to the online Word course:

1. Open your browser.

2. Through your browser, key http://cvc.webct.com Enter

3. Click on the link for First Time Users and read the information. Click on De Anza in the left column and follow diriections for logging on.

4. Key in your WebCT ID that consists of the first two letters of youor first name and the first two letters of your last name, plus the last four digits of your Student ID number. For example, Jane Smith,22226789 would logon as: USERNAME: JASM6789 Use all capitals and no spaces.

5. Press Tab key to go to Password section. Key in the word STUDENT in all capitals and click OK.

6. If you are asked to change your password, type ini your old password STUDENT, then press the Tab key and type in your new six -letter password of your choosing. Confirm your new password. Click on Update Password link at the bottom left of your screen. WRITE DOWN YOUR USERNAME AND PASSWORD. I do not have access to student passwords!

7. Click on CAOS 91AL, J. Colvard.

8. You will see several licons on the Homepage. Click on these icons for more information. All icons are not active at this time. You will see several icons on the Homepage. Click on the icons and read the information. Print out your Syllabus and your Assignments so you can work offline. Also, check the "Calendar" to see when assignments are due.

Submitting Assignments

When you complete the Assessments for a chapter, you will submit to instructor by following the steps below.

1. From Homepage, click the Assessment Tools icon.

2. Click the Assignment Dropbox.

4. Click Student Files, then click Upload.

3. Click Browse to locate the files you want to submit. Click the file name twice to select and open the file. The name of the file will now appear in the FileName text box. Click on all Assessments for each chapter before uploading. You must submit all assignments for each chapter as one submission. 4. Click Upload.

5. Click Return to Assignment hyperlink. Click Submit Assignment a second time if necessary. A confirmation screen will appear with the message, "Confirm: Assignment will be submittted; Proceed?" Click OK.

6. The Assignment screen reappears with the message Not Graded. After I grade your assignment, the Not Graded message changes to Graded. Click the hyperlink to view my comments about your work. Remember: You must use single-word filenames. WebCT will not recognize filenames with spaces, or characters that are not numbers or letters.
