EXTRA CREDIT Nutrient DensityEvaluate Foods for Nutrient Density
1. BE SURE TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. Check schedule page for due date. N0 CREDIT will be given if you have not followed directions or if this assignment is turned in late
2. Print off the Nutrient Density Food List and Nutrient Density Worksheet
3. Watch Nutrition 10 Nutrient Density PowerPoint Slides. You can down load these slides from this site. (If you need PowerPoint, use the web site in the Open Media Lab.)
4. Once you have watched the PowerPoint Slides, use the Nutrient Density Food List to complete the assignment as follows:
5. Select 4 foods from the list that fit in ONE of the following FOOD GUIDE PYRAMID GROUPS:
a. MILK
b. ANIMAL MEAT
c. PLANT ALTERNATIVES FOR MEAT
d. FRUIT
e. VEGETABLE
f. GRAIN
6. On the worksheet calculate the percent of kcalories for each of the 4 foods. Then determine the vitamins and minerals which you would consider to be either GOOD and EXCELLENT sources of the nutrient for each food. It will be easier for me to correct your work if you will also write in the % Daily Value for each of the vitamins and minerals as well.
7. Are there similarities in the NUTRIENT DENSITY between the foods you selected and what are they?
Write your explanation on the back side of worksheet.
8. HINTS FOR SUCCESS
a. Be sure to watch the PowerPoint presentation. You will find the explanation of Good and Excellent Sources.
b. Note that % DAILY VALUES for the nutrients have ALREADY been calculated. The values for the nutrients found on the food list are the % DAILY VALUES. You only need to calculate % of calories for each food.
