EXTRA CREDIT Nutrient Analysis
Limited Nutrient Analysis for One Day Food Recall
1. You can use NAT Tool Version 2.0 to determine the carbohydrate, fat and protein content of each food in your 24 hour recall intake (#3 assignment). This program is available at the following web site: http://www.nat.uiuc.edu/
2. Follow the instructions given on this site. This tool is easy to use.
First, enter your personal information by pulling down the menu for age and gender. Second, enter each food by typing in the name of the food. (The NAT 2.0 Help provides advice to help you with this part). A page of food listing will be displayed with a variety of choices. Select the one closest to what you ate. (If you have questions, post to my web site.)
3. Once you choose the food from the given list, you will enter the amount and serving size of that amount. BE VERY CAREFUL at this point. There is a pull down menu for serving sizes. (You will NOT use weight ounces for most foods. Only amounts of meats and cheeses should be given in ounces.) As described in class, most soft and liquid foods are best evaluated in their volume amounts: pints, cups or tablespoons. Use slices only for bread. Select the appropriate serving size and then enter the number of servings. Finally add this food and continue with your full list of foods for the day.
4. Once you have entered all of your food items, then press the "Analyze foods" button. The next page will give you totals for various nutrients for your foods you entered. Because it will be important to have an individual listing of the nutrient content of each food, continue by pressing "Display nutrients for individual foods".
5. Print off Display individual nutrients for selections. Note that each food has been given a number and the calories, protein, fat, carbohydrate, sodium, vitamin A, vitamin C, saturated fat, and cholesterol has been listed for each food.
6. Write your name in each page that you submit.
7.NOTE: Be sure that all foods you enter are printed. HINT: Use "landscape" and/ or reduced printing size. Or if needed, break down your foods into two lists.
8. If you have any questions about this assignment, please login and post your questions by using the Message Board. I will answer your questions on the message board page.
9.NO CREDIT will be given if this assignment is turned in late or if you have NOT followed directions.
