Welcome to my homepage; I am a member of the Philosophy department. Under Class List are the names of classes I teach @ De Anza. At the present time, I am not teaching Humanities 1 classes or Ethics even though they are still on this list. Each class has its own description under Class List, so be sure to click on the class name or part of the class name that is underlined in the left-hand column of this page.

You should know, right from the start, that in all my classes it is imperative that students learn, not only the subject area of each class, but how to think philosophically; consequently, learning how to think, write, and talk intelligently in the subject area is central. For those skills to develop you must be present in every class/discussion we have and participate; any student who is absent 4 times or more may be subject to a drop for excessive non-participation, or lose grade points for the whole class. The reason for this policy is based on my experience that few students can make a grade commensurate with their ability without attendance and participation. On the other hand, students with average ability who attend class regularly have been rather successful.

In addition, paying attention, developing one's receptive capacities, asking questions, and reading assigned materials before class are required of all students in all the classes I teach. Be sure to stay up-to-date in reading assignments, and be ready at any time for a quiz. Philosophy should evoke questions and a sense of wonder. Every class I teach has "Notes and Study Questions" that contain most all the material that must be known and explained for that class; be sure to get a copy of those "Notes" from the Bookstore, read and study them carefully, and come prepared to ask questions about that material.
