Case of Tom

• Parenting to protect from whatever was upsetting to the child vs. Parenting to help cope with upsetting moments (“learn to adapt.)”

• Focus on page 216, the case of Tom who needs parenting by you.

• Imagine you are a mother or father of Tom @ age 13 take Goleman’s account of Tom, then behave like a “learn to adapt” parent.

Directions In no more than 2 pages typed describe your "learn to adapt" parenting with Tom @ age 13. Be sure to describe what you will do to get Tom to learn to adapt, not what you think he needs to learn.

• What behaviors are you confronting? Describe in detail? How does Tom seem to feel about the situations? What do you do? What do you have Tom do? How often? Why? Who else is involved? What do you want Tom to learn?
