HISTORY 17A

History of the United States through the Eighteenth Century

COURSE DESCRIPTION The subject matter of this course is the story of the background and formative period of the United States of America. For thousands of years Native American culture had evolved with no significant contact with the outside world. Following the voyages of Christopher Columbus in the late fifteenth century, that situation changed dramatically. In just a few centuries newcomers from all parts of the world, most notably from Europe, totally changed the character of human culture in North America. The creation of the United States of America was the result of these changes. This course will survey the historical evolution of that process of change, beginning with the world before Columbus, and progressing up to the end of the eighteenth century.

PREREQUISITES Eligibility for EWRT 1A, or ESL 5 advised.
