PHOTO ESSAY PROJECT

IT IS NOT AN ESSAY,
IT IS PHOTOGRAPHS

Photo Essay Project alternative to final exam:

Objective: To communicate visually
Due date: 9am on June 23. No later than 9am for credit.
You must be in the classroom FOR THE ENTIRE CLASS PERIOD to participate as a viewer for other projects.

Rubric for grading: 20% for each of the following

1 Theme and Title
Your objective is to communicate visually rather than verbally. Give your photo essay a title. Theme, meaning, symbolism should not be so uniquely private that viewers cannot possibly relate to your work.

2 Quantity
Adequate number of photos to communicate the theme (This could vary, depending on artist's intent) Minimum of 3 photos for a passing grade. 5 is probably adequate for many projects. But do what makes sense to develop the theme of your exhibit.

3 Composition:
Some aspect of the composition unites the photos and yet they are not all the same. (i.e. don't mix B/W with color) Number photos on back and draw a diagram of how they should be arranged on wall for viewing.

4 Execution
Assessment of how effectively the elements of photography support or reinforce the meaning or feeling you are trying to communicate. (Lighting, focus, distance from subject etc.etc.) Computer tools may be used, but with care: Don't overdo it. The objective is not to create computer art.

5 Artist Statement
A short paragraph explaining your intent and why you chose that subject/theme. Be brief. Don't tell viewers how to interpret the meaning. Leave room for viewers to experience your photos in their own way.
